That's a good summary.

The data you're missing is the $69m profit earned by Symbios last year. Presumably, they're subject to the same pressures and profits are going down. Also, you might want to guess at the amount of synergy from manufacturing the old Adaptec chips in the new Symbios fab.

Mark/Mark/all, thanks for the discussion, that's what we need to figure out why the institutions have bailed on this one in such a big way. Now a contrarian would say that since we came up with all these public facts, it's already in the price so buy. I still think we'll have to set a lower low due to the acquisition. That's the only variable that wasn't in the price the last time the street recalculated fair market value<g>. Sure wish some die hard bulls could put together as long a positive list going forward.

Tom

Mark:

<<ADPT had "cash" of around $730m. Interest on this contributed about
$15m to the earnings. (i.e. around 50% of last quarter's earnings).>>

How do you get $15mm in after tax earnings for one quarter from a cash balance of $730mm? This equates to a pre-tax yield on cash of 11.5 percent. ($15mm X 4 = $60mm / $730mm = 8.2% X 1/1-29%TR = 11.5%) Please explain.

Charlie

Mark:Whats your floor assuming the Market echoes your sentiment.? In the absence of any Re-engineering, it is unlikely that the acquisition will reach its full Potential. Presently, Box, Disc Drives and Eqpt makers are under heavy pressure. It is likely that this will be passed to their suppliers.

Are you aware if ADPT has any long term contracts with any of the Box makers.

Thx.

Digital Video I am interested in DV and feel there will be a boom this year: Cheap camcorders are here with real quality. When you have a DV camcorder and a computer, you want to edit it. So you need a dv acquisition card and ultra -wide scsi disks with the right controllers. From what I understood ( but I maybe wrong) Adaptec is present in both with a unique position. Do you think this could have a significant impact on the stock price, given a market of 500 000 editing platforms worldwide in 99 ? Are there any competitors ?
