Market Meditations: DVNTF
By Jay Lasus - 3/17/98

Over the past six months, Diversinet Corp. (DVNTF) has announced the addition of three new board members that include the Vice President of Microsoft for the Central US and Canada, the General Manager of Microsoft Network (MSN), and the Chief Scientist of Netscape. A Board of Directors of this caliber bodes well for any company.

Diversinet is a small company that has had a lot of difficulties in the past. Right now, they are looking to repair the ship. Last year, they sold the printing division of their company so they could focus on producing cutting edge e-commerce technology. In May, they plan to release their new line of products.

Their new product line has two key components. The first is a certification server, which will enable a user engaged in electronic commerce to be identified only by an ID number. In the past, it was necessary for a user to divulge his name, address, etc., which was then archived. That process saps a lot of memory and increases processing time. Also, the security of the information was in doubt. The second component of their product line is an authorization server, which allows network administrators to determine the level of access for a particular user. In recent days, Diversinet has further improved their security technology by licensing encryption technology from Certicom.

Diversinet is making a type of technology that is essential for electronic commerce. E-commerce was a $2.6 billion market in 1996, and is expected to expand to over $200 billion by the year 2001. Diversinet's technologies attempt to provide the security necessary for people to be safe in engaging in electronic commerce. The Florida Department of State recently tested the company's products. Nagy Moustafa, President of Diversinet Corp. said, ''We are delighted to contribute to the Florida government's progressive efforts to promote the safe use of public electronic networks, such as the Internet. This pilot project is a significant door-opener for Diversinet's other authentication/authorization products that can be used for many different kinds of security and digital signature applications in state government, ranging from electronic document notarization and filing to on-line electronic voting.''

Last year, the stock fell from the high single digits to a low of $0 9/16 just a couple of months ago. Can Diversinet overcome its past troubles? Signs of a rebound exist with the stock price now at around $3.00. With interesting products and new management talent, Diversinet may be poised to do well in the future.

1. A comprehensive out-of-the-box security solution for enabling E-commerce applications
With the widespread use of networked applications security has increasingly become a main concern to MIS divisions. In a networked environment, applications execute on a server allowing MIS to better manage users and systems. However, with the Internet, extranets and intranets different types of users can run different applications from multiple access points. As a result, security is of a prime concern. Unfortunately, existing solutions are too complex and feature rich for some of the everyday security issues and needs facing system administrators. Businesses and software developers need to have access to a simple and easy approach to integrate security features with their applications.

Diversinet is developing the next generation security technology for networked environments which will provide businesses with efficient, flexible and comprehensive out-of-the-box security solutions for the intranet, extranet and Internet applications.

Two main services are required as part of any security solution these are:

 Authentication: Providing assurance of identity.
Authorization: Ensuring that resources are used by persons with the correct privileges

At the core of Diversinet's product line is a Certificate Server that provides services that include entity authentication services through an Authentication Server, authorization services through an Permit Server. The Permit Server is an extension of the authentication subsystem that issues temporary licenses called Permits, to use a resource. For example, the Permit Server would issue a Permit to access a library or a database for a week at off peak hours. The main differentiators of Diversinet's products are that they provide authentication anonymously and are based on a patented public-key infrastructure technology

Diversinet has developed technology with no limit to the number of issued certificates - allowing for scalable systems, a major hurdle for widespread use of certificate servers at large businesses. A Diversinet-enabled system can service several thousands of users. The key to Diversinet's system is its simplicity and a small footprint certificate.
2. Diversinet -- The Business Value Proposition
The Diversinet solution enables secure e-commerce and networked applications. In addition, to its technological advantages that include a small footprint and simple, yet powerful, certificate; the Diversinet solution offers corporations the following business benefits:

Lower total cost of ownership: With Diversinet solution being an out-of-the-box solution that includes a comprehensive set of services: PKI, authentication and authorization services; the cost of training, management and maintenance is significantly lower.

Increased productivity: With a consistent set of certificate generating systems and of APIs developers can deploy applications faster and easier. After the initial learning experience development will reuse a familiar system that can provide all of the needed security features for an application. In addition, developers do not have to deal with multiple vendors who provide security services that do not inter-operate. This translates to increased productivity by allowing developers to focus on the application itself.

Increased profits: With Diversinet's powerful technology corporations can easily and effectively deploy e-commerce applications. This translates to increased revenue by reducing cost of operations.

3. Diversinet -- The Product Line
Diversinet's products can be software-based or can use hardware smart cards for authenticating users. The technology can also be applied to devices that need to communicate and authenticate each other in a networked environment.
