Rational's RequisitePro Requirements Management Tool Will Lead High-Growth
Requirements Management Windows Market in 1998

CUPERTINO, Calif., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Standish Group, a leading,
independent market and technology research firm today released a special
COMPASS report titled "What Are Your Requirements?" ranking Rational(R)
Software Corporation's RequisitePro(TM) as the industry's fastest growing,
Windows-based requirements management tool. This report signifies the growth
and relevance of the emerging requirements management market and points to
Rational as the leading Windows-based requirements management tool provider in
1998.
The trends fueling the growth of the $35 million requirements management
tools market, according to the report, include: the integration of
requirements management tools into product suites that address the full
software development lifecycle, the year 2000 challenge, an emphasis on
project management, and ease of adoptability of the requirements management
discipline. The Standish Group also projects that the annual growth rate of
the requirements management tools market is 50%.
According to the report, "Requirements management tools are an emerging
market with explosive potential. Requirements are the basic ingredient of
every single IT project; there is no limit to the areas in which the tools can
be applied."
"The Standish Group was one of the first to understand and quantify the
significant contribution of requirements management to software project
success. We are pleased to see technology research firms recognize
requirements management as a discipline and actively follow the market,"
stated Roger Oberg, vice president and general manager of Rational's
requirements management products. "We respect and appreciate that they

Whether or not they are succeeding and improving their effectiveness at work remains to be seen

A view from the trenches. Whatever the strengths of the product line (and I happen to believe that it is the best implementation around right now) this company is going to have to do something about either i) its go-to-market strategy or ii) the people it hires to build that market.

As a small systems integration business, we have had a number of interactions with the company in the last few years, and it is still one of the most difficult companies to deal with at street level. Phone calls go unanswered, appointments are cancelled at the last minute and so on. Their image (from this perspective at least) is one of total self-sufficiency: i.e. they need no help in conquering the world, thank you very much.

Hopefully the Platinum move will make them realise that they are going to need all the friends they can get.
