ATMs may replace PINs with eyes

Technology straight out of Mission Impossible using photos of a consumer's eye for identification will be tested at ATMs worldwide this year.

Moorestown, N.J.-based Sensar has developed an ID system that takes a photo of the iris, converts it to a computer pattern and compares it with data on file - all in about two seconds.

Dozens of ATMs in the USA and about 400 worldwide will be equipped this year, though Sensar's Rob Van Naarden declined to disclose the banks and locations, saying contracts have not been finalized.

But Nationwide, Britain's biggest mortgage lender, is slated to begin a test April 1.

And Citibank has signed a $3 million contract to develop and purchase the technology and plans to test it in two major U.S. cities this summer, Van Naarden says.

Citibank would not confirm the plans.

From the font page of today's USA Today. Page 5B of the paper copy has a nice graphic of the 'human bar code' produced from the iris scan.

Does anybody know of US ATM's using or testing fingerprints - from IDX or any competitor?
