For some reason, given the track record of this management team, I tend to think EP & EM are shooting for your 3rd point...this must have something to do with reducing the cost of acquiring DEC & gaining market share (ie. installed base on the business side not just the consumer) before the release of WIN98 & before the Pentium II is the standard we all have in those boxes...just my thought.

More importantly...

In a related matter, Digital Wednesday started notifying some workers of pending layoffs, according to sources close to the company. Digital officials, however, denied layoffs started today. Analysts speculate Digital could eventually let 20,000 people go after the merger.

I predict the stock will bounce smartly well before the formal announcement actually does come down. As usual, employee reductions are going to benefit shareholders and we can only hope those DEC and CPQ employees being sent on involuntary vacations are long their respective companies.
