Hi Nemer,

OT -- melting modems
Hooked it back up, ----and viola, it WORKS...

Got to love it. Glad your modem is healthy again. There is another way for lightning to get into your computer -- through the phone line. So, if your UPS doesn't have an in an out for the phone line you might want to go down to a staples or office max and buy a power strip with a built in surge protector. It will have an in and out jack for the phone line as well. Cost is ~12$ for a 350J device and 25$ for a 1500J device. The 350J (joule) is probably fine. You could then plug your UPS into the power strip for an extra layer of protection through the power lines.

Stay away from me, your electrical problems are bad luck.

Precisely at the open, my new HP printer decided to go on strike. While trying to fix it (sans hammer) I noticed that Euclid was arguing with Pythagoras and neither would accept data. (I had just installed new software on Euclid). 15 minutes into fixing that, a fax I tried to send crapped out and the fax machine went on the blink.

I'm still trying to get a handle on this new software and my mind is so addled I almost went long. (Bless us and save us, perish the thought).
