The March 98 NYS medical society newsletter reported of a survey
by Health Care Assocition of NY. Below is partial reproduction
of New York HMO survey:

Oxford HIP Aetna Blue Choice Ind. Health

Enrollment 1142K 728K 700K 539K 426K

Market share 17.7% 11.3% 10.8% 8.3% 6.6%

Premium PMPM $169 $161 $137 $114 $103

MLR 87% 93% 78% 96% 92%

Admn. exp.ratio 11% 9% 12% 6% 10%

Net income PMPM $3 -1 9 -2 0

My conclusion:

Based on the survey Oxford is making 3x1,142,800x12=$41MM
annually on NY enrollment. Oxford's stats are inferior to
those of Aetna's. My understanding is that Oxford's service
is superior to that of Aetna's. Oxford is working very
hard to reduce overheads. It seems premium increase
is touchy issue.
