Digital Terrestrial TV in Singapore..............................

Tay Joo Thong, vice president of engineering at Television Corporation Singapore and chairman of the Singapore Digital TV Committee-the body which will recommend the appropriate digital standard for Singapore-is confident consumers will buy, despite the higher cost of the service compared to analog. It is still in its early days and the number of potential subscribers is difficult to gauge, but punters will be lured by the promise of better picture quality and multi-channel TV programming. "Additionally digital offers a lot of flexibility and interactive multimedia applications can be developed," says Tay.

Advent began its trial Feb. 26, testing the European Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) system. "Competition for the licence was strong" says Jeff Chatfield, Advent's managing director. Advent took two years before submitting its proposal to the SBA. Currently a 10-member team, Advent was incorporated in Singapore last year.

The system uses NDS supplied encoders and OFDM digital terrestrial modulation equipment to supply the digital transport stream. The transmission system has been integrated by New Zealand company, Broadcast Communications Limited (BCL). Transmission is taking place on Singapore's Channel 35. Advent will also evaluate the U.S. Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) system.

Newcomer Japanese Terrestrial Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting (ISDB-T) system will also be examined before Advent makes its recommendations to the SBA.
