Negative Forbes article on DVD. The author is so well-informed that he thinks that no one agrees on what "DVD" stands for..........

<<Sadly, given its contentious history, no one
can agree on what DVD actually means. Is it
Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc? >>

HDTV format wars........................................

Despite Intel's [INTC] defection from the PC industry's challenge over HDTV formats, it appears the battle is far from over. Debate over standards, lack of test data and new rumblings from the computer industry are just some of the latest obstacles on the road to full-scale DTV. ATSC, the organization charged with developing and promoting DTV standards, has been putting out fires on several fronts recently.

When Microsoft [MSFT], Compaq [CPQ] and Intel announced their formation of a "digital team" to promote the PC industry's own DTV standards last April, it was a challenge broadcasters ignored. Others, however, considered this the opening salvo in a battle over video formats the FCC had left to the marketplace when the commission adopted ATSC standards in December, 1996. At stake is the future HDTV format-while broadcasters (who back ATSC) support the interlaced 1080/720 scanning format, the PC industry is pushing the progressive 1920/1080 format, and until the marketplace decides, both sides are trying to gain the competitive edge.
