Fred, Article...U.S. computer company opens plant in Costa Rica...

March 19, 1998

SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA - AP World News : Intel opened its first Latin American plant here Wednesday, saying it plans to produce a quarter of its microprocessors in this Central American nation.

''We were very impressed by the ease, flexibility and rapidity of the Costa Rican officials in meeting our needs,'' said Intel's vice president Mike Splinter.

President Jose Maria Figueres and President-elect Miguel Angel Rodriguez, who takes office May 8, both attended the inauguration of the first part of the company's dlrs 500 million production center on the outskirts of San Jose, near the international airport.

It is the first computer chip factory in Costa Rica and the largest foreign investment ever made in the country.

The company said it chose Costa Rica because of its high education level, quality of transportation and an investment-friendly government.

Intel's manager for Costa Rica, Cesar Quiason, said the new plant next week will start producing new Celeron chips aimed at the market for under dlrs 1,000 computers, in which rivals AMD and Cyrix have made strong gains.

Intel plans to eventually have four plants to assemble and test electronic components which will produce 25 percent of its microprocessors worldwide. The second of the four plants is to be completed in September.

It now employs 950 people and plans eventually to have as many as 5,000 workers.

By November 1999, the company expects to have the capacity to export dlrs 3 billion a year worth of output.

Computer company?? Why do I have a funny feeling the person writing that headline doesn't invest in techstocks? :-)

Fred, Re: "700 MHz! Sign me up <GG>"

Where's Albert, or was it Fuchi, to ask where they hid the refrigerator? Remember when Intel demoed a 0.35 micron process Pentium II at 433 MHz about a year ago, by chilling the chip down? Our "competition" had a field day with that one.
