I'm going to ask Brad to change the name of the thread to "SI Message Filtering - Pros & Cons" in the hope of stimulating some more feedback.

"It not a good way to get consensus, which is probably the reason David created this thread (as well as, of course, getting the traffic out of other places). "

It was apparently a semi-serious agenda as seen through these posts:

Message 3385893
Message 3385974

But is consensus often gathered by one who thinks the very subject is "Crap"?

Even if this thread was devised as an inside joke, the smugness obscures a simple fact.

Filter/Ignore/Squelch/Kill have direct analogies in the features of other message systems*. (See that last sentence as repetition for emphasis)

It's no wonder that no one tries to refute the argument. If I have made the point before, it was because there has been a serious (if laughable) distortion repeated here. For using a filter to choose one's reading material does not in any way inhibit freedom of speech. If it were true then we should unite in protest and demand an immediate worldwide recall of all the client software that has the feature.

Regards,
Michael

PS Metaphors that pose as knowledgeable winks often confuse me. If the squeaky wheel gets changed, does the brown nose also get wiped?

* Often in use by people who own no FONAR!

Dick: I'm always in favor of options that can be turned on and off, to customize the experience, as long as it doesn't get too foppish.

The first package I published had just the right amount of customizability with an astoundingly clear interface, but the second one went over the top, I think. Still, Steve Wozniak endorsed both, the only Mac software he ever endorsed, so it wasn't that bad. Customizability would be a good solution to the issue of how many characters we can preview. I don't scan very often, either, and I'm not sure which option I'd select if I had such an option, but I might well select the increased character option.

I have arrived at a solution to the first line problem on my own notes, as you can see. I am glad you brought it up.

Perhaps there's a way to ignore the strident demands of a very small minority for an ignore button. Let me know if you think of one. :-)

Actually, the problem doesn't recur on the Fonar thread any longer. Some of these characters have gotten suspended so often, it's gotten almost courteous over there.
