This was another down week for the group. The spread was large,
however, going from 17 to -20 percent. This makes for three negative
weeks in a row. The ratio of down stocks to up stocks was nearly
3 to 1 with 9 stocks up and 25 stocks down. Three stocks had no
change. The DOW went up 304 points this week, but semi-equips went
down, down, down. Quite a few entities out there don't like them.<g>

Kent,

It is not the BIG BOYS that is for sure. I was wondering the same thing myself
when I posted this on the AMAT thread

Thread,

I am looking for understanding with the following table:

Current 52 Week
Price High High
---------- -------- ---------
NASDAQ $1,779 $1,788.00 -1%

AMAT $33.31 $54.18 -39%
SEG $21.56 $54.13 -60%
INTC $76.34 $102.00 -25%
CSCO $64.56 $68.50 -6%
MSFT $80.38 $86.00 -7%
AMGN $60.22 $69.38 -13%
DELL $62.31 $71.94 -13%
MCIC $48.91 $49.00 0%
WCOM $43.00 $43.00 0%
SUNW $43.91 $53.31 -18%

The NASDAQ is just barely off of its high, yet except for
MCIC & WCOM, most of the above stocks are noticeably
off of their high. Where is all of the strength coming from?

TIA

Kent,

I tried to do a little research on your question - what is driving the NASDAQ these days. I approached the issue by deciding to look for those stocks that have been doing very well the past three to four months. I found quite a few that have doubled or better in that period. (Sure wish I had owned some of those<g>) This list below is not intended to be anywhere near complete, but rather a sampling of what I found. I'll list the stock symbol, the stock name, the generic business they are in if appropriate, and the dollar value about 3 months ago and the recent value.

BVSN Broadvision, Inc (Internet provider) 6 to 16
ELNK Earthlink Network (Internet provider) 20 to 55
MSPG Mindspring Enterprises (Internet provider) 30 to 60
ACAI Atlantic Coast Airline 25 to 50
HMSY Health Management System 6 to 13
IIXC IXC Communications (Long distance provider) 30 to 60
MAST Mastech Corporation (Information Technology Provider) 30 to 60
IMRS Information Management (Applications Software) 26 to 55
AAPL Apple Computer (How about that?) 13 to 27

Looking at this data, it indicates that internet providers, airlines, health care, communications, information technology, applications software and Apple Computer are driving this market.<g> Not a very scientific or well researched answer I agree, but there may be some truth to it. It is certainly not the semi-equip stocks I am in.
