> Alex(yet to see a single chip encoder on the market yet from anyone)

Apart from C-Cube's, I have in front of me a clipping on Sony's
single-chip MPEG-2 encoder. The part number is CXD1922Q, its
sampling now, and has one of the widest search ranges I've
seen -288 to +297.5 horizontal, -96 to +95.5 vertical. The part
combines a complete encoder, system controller and motion
estimator. Its packaged in a 208-QFP and is the perfect size
to glue to your computer monitor to remind you that Innovacom
can never be first.

The Japanese have been showing MPEG-2 single chip encoding
silicon at ISSCC every year. They're preliminary but at
least they have real silicon. In the past there have been
chips from NEC, Sony and Matsushita (Philips too, but since
they don't do B frames it doesn't really count). Each of
these companies has demonstrated far more than Innovacom.

By the time the Innovacom encoder is done, it will be simply
"another" single-chip encoder, not the "first". It remains
to be seen if it will even be a "good" encoder.

And of course there are other startups out there doing encoders
too... Have to watch out for these guys as well.

One of your touted "partners" found somebody else with a single chip encoder...

TEL AVIV, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 23, 1998--

VisionTech and Sun (TM) to Display Single Chip MPEG-2 Encoder
Technology at NAB Show '98 in Las Vegas

Sun Microsystems, Inc. has selected VisionTech, Ltd. as a strategic developer, enabling the companies to closely collaborate on the development and marketing of a family of MPEG-2 based, digital video products for Sun PCI bus based workstations and servers. The new product family, developed and manufactured by VisionTech, offers broadcast quality encoding solutions at a fraction of the cost of competitor solutions. Sun's customers will benefit, for the first time, from new applications such as digital video editing/authoring, content creation and distance learning. The PCI MPEG-2 encoder will be showcased at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show on April 6-9, 1998, in Las Vegas in Sun's booth (S3428), and VisionTech's booth (M6971).
....

Check out that search range! Hot!!

"The chip's maximum speed of data encoding is 24 Mbits/s. The motion-vector search range is plus/minus 50 pixels horizontally and plus/minus 34 pixels vertically. Power consumption is 6 W."
