It was not extremely technical but was sufficient for my purposes. It confirmed my suspicion that the read/write process for DVD was basically an adaptation of CD-ROM technology.

This quest was initiated by an announcement by Cirrus Logic that they were getting into the DVD arena:

In the article they say they are going to announce a DVD controller that uses PRML technology. PRML is a disk-drive technology, and I did not understand its application to DVD. I discussed this over on the CRUS thread:

Since the article on Cirrus and DVD was not really an official announcement, there was not a lot of detail. I couldn't tell exactly what their chip is supposed to do and whether it would compete with LSI and C-Cube's chips. From what I understand of Cirrus Logic's technology, I would think that it would, since they have expertise in MPEG video and CD-ROM controllers.
