I've been using an ATM card with an expiration date of July 2007 for months--with no trouble at all. The ATM card is connected with Michigan State Universtiy Credit Union, where I have my checking account.

Just the beginning ...
Chicago Tribune - Mar 21 '98

Amoco Corp.'s income BEFORE taxes will be CUT cut by about $55 million this year because of costs involved in fixing the company's computers so they can read dates starting in the year 2000. The computer upgrades will cut income by a total of about $100 million over the three-year period ending in December 1999, according to the company's annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

I pity people holding mutual funds ... as Y2K disclosures increase. This is just a drop in the bucket. Tip of the iceberg.

Speaking of "icebergs" ...

These articles really got DH and I thinking about what we should do if worst comes to worst and power systems fail, etc. We even started drawing up a list of things to get and do:

batteries (assorted)
battery operated lamps
Coleman or sterno stove
wood stove for heat
get house insulated
canned/paper goods
gold/silver coins
water in drums or barrels
portapotty?

DH was walking around figuring how much water we'd need for a month. :-) Plus the financial stuff - get out of the market, have enough cash on hand, keep good records of SS and bank accounts, etc. I'm starting to feel like they must have felt in the 1950's building bomb shelters.

Print out each index page and give to "naysayers" who don't think there's a problem.
