Nice discussion on the diamond counts of the falt lying dyke it is good to get the various perspectives. Opening up the dyke will give the geologists a much better picture of what they are dealing with and should give some insights to the geology and the bulk sample will give us a fairly good idea of its potential.
From the literature Ive read some dykes also seem to form traps where diamonds concentrate, usually in a buldge or fold in the dyke.
It would be interesting to encounter one of those.
The Arctic Winter games ended last night with a fire works display which was great. I think Alaska won the medal count with the NWt second although in these games that isnt all that important. It is the fun and competition that counts. They have hockey, volleyball, skiing etc but the northern sports are (I find) more interesting in some ways. Most of them are sports which people could do in small areas. In one they hang a little ball of fur from a string then the competitor stands under it, jumps to kick the ball with his/her foot and must land standing. It sounds simple enough but involves alot of strength, balance and coordination.
A dance troup of four from Russia was one of the highlights of the cultural events. Some of the dances were imitating various northern birds and animals.
The weather in the north is sunny, mild (just slightly below zero) and the bald eagles have returned so spring is on its way. They will be blocking off the winter road soon or only using it at night or if it turns cold again. Still lots of ice and snow but with mild temperatures and the suns increasing elevation and heat it can play havock on the portages. If the government were on the ball it would start pushing a year round road north to the diamond mines and to pay for it they could charge tolls to the companies. Not only would it pay for itself but it would open up alot of country to mining and tourism.
