Mathon, the wisdom of your logic may be sound, but the overriding factor in this equation is that SGI has already allowed MSFT to enjoy it's favors with every possible orfice. SGI has allowed MSFT to wallow in the perfumed pleasures of its memory managment and I/O and graphics technology, for several years, and all of these things will be found in the genetic material of NT5.0. there is work being done to put IRIX on merced, tho i am hearing of formidable difficulties being encountered. alas, i too think that Sun would make a fine partner for SGI to face life with, and McNealy's atavistic stance and unrepentant ferocity in the ideological battles would inspire the SGI faithful to new heights. SGI's MSFT rose, still has it's blush. but if Sun were to recount it's tale of MSFT's faithlessness with JAVA, around the campfire some starry evening, SGI might see the error of it's wantonness and repent. everytime i see <MICROSOFT.com> in the cc: field of an SGI memo, i shudder.

MD,

Let me see now. You're suggesting that SGI throw away its server biz completely, which by the way consistuted ~50% of its revenue in the past several quarters. And furthermore SGI should put its graphics hardware on Sun workstations which have declined 10% in market share in the past year in a overall declining UNIX workstation market. Ummm ... I don't think so.

>>> The UNIX wars are over. Solaris wins hands down.

Well Mathon, irix is a pretty good linux clone. But Solaris is
the nt of linux clones. But never fear. Linux is ported on
sparc's on dec alpha's and now you could check out linux.sgi.com

The Linux/SGI project. If you like to get a interesting analysis
of big computing and possible pathway's, get a copy of Linux Journal
#46. It's interesting how linux on alpha's did most of the compute
dog work in the making of Titanic.

ssc.com

From my own extensive experience,
linux on a 486 is like nt on a 266 pentium II. linux on a 166
ppro is about an r10000 @133.

If your unfamiliar with linux, you are not in a position to judge
all the inferior linux clones. irix, hpux, slowlaris or dec pukixs

If a real company decide's to sell a merced box with linux and a
couple of companies port some more professional aps, This could
be some real competition for SGI. Alpha's running linux replaced
SGI compute engines in the making of titanic.
