I won't be surprised if the Fed and the States come out with a mandate for 100% pure Java for government contracts and procurements involving the use of Java.

Count on it. Java hardware and software that purports to be compliant will have to track the ISO standard which provides an easily verifiable basis. It's not just the Federal and local State governments but Europe and Asia, too. That's why the ISO announcement was such a big deal. There goes Windows and watch out for falling boxes of Microsoft Office, too. Microsoft Office will be one of the first casualties of Java's onslaught whether it's IBM's eSuite or some other product. No more incompatible file formats! The question now is when to short Microsoft.
