>>does DEC think they are shortchanged or has their fundamentals deteriorated similarly like CPQ.<<

IMO, no they were ailing already, yes the fundmentals have deteriorated else they would not go for the deal.

>>Some DEC exec was quoted in the Boston Globe as saying that some customers have delayed orders until they analyze the effects of the pending merger. <<

This is probably true, and they may have interest in getting the merger done soon.

>>Some thinks it's lousy and will be replaced by Merced while others say it's light years ahead over anything in the market today. What's the real beef???? <<

It is way ahead of Merced, but the important question is what will CPQ do with it; that part is yet unknown and Alpha's future is hanging on that decision (about which nothing is known yet, and will probably stay that way until the merger is complete).

>>Furthermore, the Justice Dept. is analyzing some arrangement that DEC has with Intel on chip manufacturing. Does anyone think the CPQ deal has any significant impact on this agreement? Why should the Justice Dept. even care for that matter? <<

No effect whatsoever, the CPQ deal will go through regardless of what happens with Intel (afterall CPQ got them cheap didn't they? ;-))
