I have a theory on the origin of the name 'Torquemada' - 'quemada' is easy, it means 'burnt', it is the past participle of the verb 'quemar', 'to burn'. But where did 'Tor' come from? Well, the name Andalusia comes from the name of the Vandals, the same Teutonic tribe who sacked Rome, they settled later in the Iberian peninsula. There is other northern blood kicking around those parts as well, and I think it's entirely possible that 'Tor' is from 'Thor', the Norse god of thunder, and that 'Torquemada' means 'burnt by Thor'.
