I think anyone would understand the difference between Zulu Broadcasting and Zulu-tek, especially where zulu is used so universally--I mean don't spies and Australian coast-watchers even use the term for clandestine activity or spotting ships at sea?

SAN JOSE, CA, June 23, 1997 - Driving the deployment of mobile technology at our nation's colleges and universities, Acer America Corporation today introduced the Acer Scholar Program which includes the Texas Instrumentsr Extensa-Scholar Series* of notebook computers. The Acer Scholar program forms the foundation for Acer's innovative vision of a technologically-advanced campus in which wireless technology and notebook computers combine to create a "mobile client server" environment, enhancing the learning experience by giving students and faculty immediate access to data anytime, from anywhere on campus.
The Extensa-Scholar Series is a unique family of powerful, high-value portable computers built specifically for the higher education community. Designed for the mobile computing needs and transitional work styles of both students and faculty, the Extensa-Scholar Series includes powerful Intelr Pentiumr processors, removable 1.4GB hard disk drives, 10-speed CD-ROMs and 1.44MB external floppy disk drives. In order to meet the connectivity needs of students and faculty - both wired and wireless - the Extensa-Scholar Series products come bundled with a 3Comr Ethernet card and 33.6 Fax/data modem and have been extensively tested for flawless performance on wireless networks. This feature-set allows for quick connectivity from anywhere on campus and ensures a true mobile environment.
"Acer worked closely with higher-education faculty and administrators from across the nation, as well as college students, to design a program that would enhance the vision of a mobile campus environment and meet the needs of both students and faculty," stated Steve Lair, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Commercial Systems for Acer America Corporation. "As part of a long-term commitment, we created the Extensa-Scholar Series to be an integral part of the delivery system for technology in education. The notebooks and accessory products are designed to be carried everywhere learning takes place - dorm rooms, libraries, campus lounges, labs and classrooms."
Acer is also working to integrate the higher education technology vision through strategic partnerships. These carefully chosen partners provide technology that allows the Scholar Program's mobile client server environment to support collaborative and student-centered learning in new and innovative ways throughout the campus. Acer is working with the key wireless systems providers to integrate a total wireless solution for both university students and faculty. Through these alliances, Acer can access the campus wired and wireless needs, to best effect a total communications solution with the universities' servers and the faculty and student body and bring a complete leading-edge technology solution to aid in delivering dramatically improved access to key information used in student learning and campus management. These wireless solutions are available in speeds from 500KB to over 3MB with wireless access points strategically located throughout the campus.
Another example of Acer's technology partnerships is the electronic white-board technology which allows quicker and clearer learning, increased understanding of concepts and increased interaction among students and faculty. The whiteboard can also be used to enhance distance learning, allowing a class to explore the Internet together and work with collaborative software packages.
"One of the most impressive aspects of this launch is the degree to which the Acer project team researched the education market and responded with a total solution -- including special models, marketing support for education resellers and special services such as a financing program for students," said Jane F. Kelly, Director/General Manager, Education Division, Ingram Micro.
Extensa-Scholar Series Ease-of-Use Features Available in two models, the ESS2 and the ESS3, the Extensa-Scholar Series features 16MB EDO RAM (expandable to 64MB), 1.4GB hard disk drive, 10-speed fixed CD-ROM, external 1.44MB floppy disk drive, 3Com 10BaseT Ethernet card, 33.6Kbps modem, a long-lasting NiMH battery and a zoomed video port for high-performance video data transfer rate. Both models include 16-bit video RAM and are SoundBlaster compatible. The ESS2 includes a Pentium 133MHz processor and a 11.3-inch color dual-scan display. The ESS3 features a Pentium 150MHz processor and a 11.3-inch active-matrix display.
"Acer designed the Extensa-Scholar Series to address all aspects of the learning process," said Keith Cullum, Higher Education Marketing Manager, for Acer America Corporation. "In the university setting, students are never in one place for very long, yet they need access to data and research capabilities all the time. This continual need for access to the campus intranet and the World Wide Web is assuaged with Acer's tested, integrated wireless connectivity solutions.
"The Scholar Program and Scholar Extensa-Series are both designed to improve the way a subject is taught -- incorporating technology into the delivery system and enhancing productivity. Our vision is to deliver a more effective means for research, and facilitate more efficient communication between the student and faculty, between faculty and administrators, and between students and family members," continued Cullum.
The full-featured Scholar Extensa-Series allows for applications such as word processing, multimedia presentations, spreadsheets, database manipulation, remote communications, and research via Internet and intranet access.
Utilizing Acer's Technology Across the Campus Sacred Heart University, located in Connecticut, implemented its Student Mobile Computing Program to provide every full-time undergraduate student with an Extensa multimedia ready notebook computer. The notebooks give students mobility to move around campus and stay connected through a campus-wide network in classrooms, dorm rooms and the library.
"This program provides our students with a distinct advantage in their professional development," said Vincent Mangiacapra, Chief Information Officer for Sacred Heart University. "By incorporating the computer into the curriculum, students are allowed timeless interaction with their professors, can participate with on-line collaboration groups and even have the ability to do world-wide research from their dorm room."
