What a pain. I came home to a Western Digital HDD failure on my older 486 machine (the one my wife uses). She couldn't get a side publishing job done. No C:\ prompt

Of course, it's my fault in her eyes - "You have too much sh*t on the machine, that's why".

I had to take the machine apart and reverse the master/slave switches on the 2 drives and voila! the system booted - but of course all the drive letters are now wrong.

I decided to put it back together the way it was and it worked again!
A cable must have worked slightly loose (hopefully).

It works for now, but I may also have a flaky drive or controller. The machine is now 5 years old. Just what I didn't need.

2 hours wasted - oh well I had to tell someone. Now to put the d*mn thing back together.
