Well, I am still operating on American stereotypes, but aren't old-style Italian mothers very nurturing, wonderful cooks who indulge their male children?

What's interesting is that it isn't only the (fast-disappearing) non-working "old-style" Italian mamma who does this. At least in the cities, most women here work, and still put up with 30-year-old children living at home, expecting food on demand and clean laundry daily.

...is it true or false that in Italy, men are still sometimes very forward and presumptuous and do things like just grab at a strange woman to whom they are attracted?

No. They do make comments to women in the street, but this is almost always a game. They can be quite inventive, and frequently gallant. They don't touch, but they do stare. But here everybody stares at anything that seems interesting, perfectly okay behavior.
