Why don't you ask the IT people on this thread? My wife is a systems manager for Boeing. She always wants the fastest machine around, because the clerical people using the system she designed use the computing power.

Sounds like you are taking seriously my gibe about the resurgence of the abacus and slide rule, but this time with vengeful IT folks!

I understand your clarification and appreciate that you are trying to be nice. However, both Venkie's and my points are valid.

Venkie's point - If a corporation spends $2m annually for PCs, wouldn't they derive a benefit, not to mention cost advantage, to provide standard PCs. This allows for interchangeability, single product for in-house IT management, corporate standardization, etc.

My point - In my experience, we provided the secretaries with low performance PCs. When lack of funding did not permit adding additional personnel in times of business growth, the secretaries were requested to handle more technical aspects, such as preparation of presentations, flow diagrams, etc. It turns out that by supplying them with "word/net connect" only machines, they could not provide the assistance we required, (graphics capability). In other words, the secretaries or assistants who were provided the up-to-date machines added to our productivity by using the most technically advanced tools available.

Just curious, your profile implies you run an investment firm, Patterson Capital. Does this firm only go short DELL? Seems a reasonable assumption since you only post on the DELL thread.

Re your current FUD. Is that soccer mom gonna be upset at the guy who sold her that SUV if she figures out the four wheel drive and high clearance don't do her any good because she never leaves the pavement?

Your hypothetical situation assumes the IT guy didn't know what he was doing and that he is going to blame someone else for his own mistake. Besides the chance that an IT guy is going to get flak for saddling somebody with excess capacity is quite small.
