In truth, the twelve-year-old here says she's not really in love with Leo, but with his character in the movie. But then, waht else is new?

Isn't taht what movies are FOR?

There seems to be a disconnect between teenage idolization of this character and the behavior in real life of these fans. Typically they DO NOT go for "pretty" teenage boys who are artistically inclined and good listeners but rather egotistic Neanderthals who bash skulls, peak too early in life, and don't listen. I guess their status needs and need for a sense of protection take precedence in reality. 99 out of a hundred fans of this movie if faced with Rose's choice in real life go with Billy Zane, especially if he plays varsity sports and teases the kid in the band or in theatre. There might actually be more men like the DiCaprio character if young women encouraged it in real life.
