VRSN is not on a roll.. I have a friend who works there. VRSN is at a dead end. That's why they partnered with Lucent so they can do some R&D. You must understand that VRSN & DVNTF have been focusing on two completely different areas. VRSN focused on an individual authentication solution. DVNTF focused on a computer industry/businesses/communication security solution. (basically AAPL and MSFT all over again). VRSN has no idea how to implement their technology in the following areas: (i.e. no vision) 1. Networking. (VPN's, routers, clients, servers, databases, authorization/permission to various groups, domains, resources/applications, etc...) 2. Applications (API's, unauthorized distribution, source authentication, application access levels) 3. Wireless devices. Phones, pagers, etc.. (secure data transmissions, authorized senders and recipients) 4. EBusiness peripherals (Verifone products, smart cards, printers, etc...) 5. Mass production of portable generic dynamic certificates 6. Databases. That's why they partnered with Lucent Bell Labs and that's why you don't hear industry leaders talking about them. Industry leaders are just waiting for something they can actually use. Lucent is basically an R&D company. Don't misunderstand me. VRSN is very good at what they do and that is: "Guarantee an individuals identity." The Pentagon, CIA, FBI, U.S. Government could use VRSN's technology. But the computer industry/businesses don't have the same needs. So, Lucent will do one or two things: 1) Figure out how to utilize VRSN's technology in the 6 areas mentioned above (develop computer industry/businesses/communication solutions). The problem with this is that DVNTF is way ahead. They have already implemented and tested their technology in areas 1,2,3,5&6. In other words DVNTF is closing in on the computer industry/businesses/communication market. VRSN is scrambling to get a piece of this. (i.e. the recent agreement with Lucent). If DVNTF releases a good product that provides an efficient computer industry/businesses/communication solution this year.. they will be a force to be reckoned with. However, if Lucent/Verisign get a piece of this in 1998 DVNTF may have some competition. But have no fear, this market is HUGE. Numerous competitors would have more than enough room for growth. Remember there are many different areas in security that companies can focus on and specialize in. 2) Figure out how to utilize VRSN's technology in eye scanners, fingerprint security devices, etc. (develop high level individual security solutions). This is ALL VRSN's market, DVNTF has absolutely no power here. The question is: What is the computer industry/businesses/communication markets vision? It's not very clear. The vision is still evolving as we speak. The challenge is: Determining in advance the direction in which the vision will go. By doing so we will be able to make wise investments. There Did VRSN need to side with Lucent in order to justify their insane ask price and even more insane mkt cap before the Street wakes up to the fact that VRSN is struggling to meet the needs of the computer industry/businesses/communication market?
