Dan, Intel/Compaq have had the tech stocks worried about problems with overall PC unit demand.... But the truth is:

Compaq: This is not about "competition." Compaq has completely mismanaged inventories and has failed to execute in general. Note that Dell and even Gateway are doing extremely well...

Intel: Doesn't need to cut prices. They could triple prices if they wanted, cause no matter what, AMD/Cyrix/etc. can't hope to make enough CPUs to meet more than 20% of demand. Intel is cutting prices so steeply, however, for long term positioning--notice that they're getting Slot-interface chips in every part of the market (even Celeron, which is a piece of crap is here for the sub-1000 market--although a PentiumMMX system performs similarly and is cheaper to produce). As you know, this is an attempt to lock out the competition. Intel is basically just sacrificing 1998 so that they'll again have no competitors in 1999+. After which, back to price gouging of course!

Check out this link. It has some interesting survey information on actual PC application usage.

mediametrix.com

Guess how much of that runs on Windows or NT.
