Since MSFT applications also lead on the Macintosh where they have no advantage over other application vendors, the answer must be that they know how to build winning applications.

I think those of you looking for dramatic leadership changes if MSFTs applications and systems groups are split are in for a big disappointment. Much of MSFTs advantage at this point is their hard-earned reputation for delivering the goods. Customers believe them when they say they will ship a useful product, improve it over time, and offer workable upgrade paths...and that is EXACTLY what the deep pockets customers want. MSFT is headed much higher long term.
