I have to agree that Apple made a big mistake to ignore the application market. But do not forget Microsoft holds their Mac applications and Windows applications tie to avoid other application vendors get into the market even for Apple itself.

In the Wintel world Microsoft successfully uses both OS and application to create the dependence between the two and dominate both. I do not believe Microsoft's success is based on the product quality or services. All other application companies also create good (or better) products but still face the pressure from Microsoft. Even the innovative product (Netscape) can not make thing better. Microsoft's reputation to create innovative product is poor. They take too much from this industry and feed back too little. It will be nice to break Microsoft into two and make the software industry more healthy.
