From memory, I was pretty sure she had received the Oscar for best actress. I can now recall her acceptance of that award; in a word, she was flabbergasted, nearly speechless. She had been hardly anybody's expected winner. Some even went so far as to say it was an insult to give the award to an actress who was "new" and had not yet been in the trenches, or so the story of the day went.

My comment was that "Darling" was her first MAJOR motion picture.

Again, my memory may be playing tricks on me, but I thought "Darling" was released prior to Dr. "Zhivago." This may have been a regional thing, however.
