Yes, I too feel this is a factor.

- Probably not money. He is already a billionaire, and he could probably earns more, and with less hassle by founding his own company, or by leveraging Pixar

Apparently he felt that not being a billionaire was a big chink in his armour. I understand that with Pixar, he's now barely over the magic figure. Could he be looking for a safety margin?

- make the next insanely great thing. Like he did once with Apple, once and a half with Next and twice with Pixar.

Indeed, and with Columbus just ahead he ought to be CEO of Apple to do just that.
