David, being short is not so different to being long...

Shorting is very different. First, in a short position there are no end to your losses. You can lose much more than your initial investment. Bankruptcy does not protect you against Security collection, so you can literally lose everything.

To effectively short requires a great deal of DD and minute by minute monitoring. Have you looked at their financials, does their cashflow have a problem? Is there stuff hidden underneath the carpet? You are shorting a company that is being accumulated by some large institutions. Do you think they are done? Do you think TAVA will announce soon? Or, how about NMS, which is always good for a pop?

Patrick, I hope you don't lose a lot of money or resort to continuous posts on this thread telling us the stock will drop so we should all sell. TAVA will probably announce soon, its been a little while.

Patrick - Au contraire. The difference twixt taking profits and going short is the difference between a missed opportunity and an actual capital loss.

It's generally best to wait until a stock shows some signs of weakness before going short. You're shorting just as TAVA is starting to flex its new margin muscles.

A big buyer[s] has been hitting TAVA since 10.
Check yesterday's chart. At 13 1/2 a HUGE buyer hit it again.

re which institutions? - too soon to tell. But the tape seldom lies.
I expect at least one more day of institutional buying [today] so that after the 3-day to settle, a huge winner will be on their Q1 books.

Then, once the big boys are in, I expect IR will "thank" them with a press release to make their timing have been right.

I sincerely urge caution on the short side at this point.
At what price did you go short, and will you average up if it rises?

Nice little y2k blurb in this week's Time. I expect to see a feature cover story in the near future. Until then, this problem and this stock are still *undiscovered* (imvho)

PSB & BJP -- Greatly appreciate a reasoned and well presented contraian view....... solid, helpful debate w/o personal attacks and FUD will enrich us all (eventually!). This thread continues to set a standrd for excellence well beyond what we find in too many other places. Thanks to all for the level of research and discussion.

Patrick:

I believe it's a misnomer to say TAVA has risen on no news. Y2K news coverage has mushroomed and embedded system coverage has only been a focus recently. With the SEC reporting requirements now forcing companies to be public with their Y2K efforts Wall Street has to seriously look at who the winners will be and TAVA is a compelling story.

This may be IN-direct news but I'm factoring it in. We may see a pullback but I wouldn't bet on it yet.

JMHO......vpelt
