AMES started to move into upper middle class business this year with 27"TV, Lawn storage cabinets, large toys, fine quality furnitures, fine cookware and china, but no limited upscale items in clothing yet. "Bargains by the bagful" still the main theme to take care of the base customers who are getting more affluent along with AMES. TJX, 46 (18 more this year)stores of Filenes basement, and Federated stores may have surplus just enough in quantities for AMES' upscale projects. Gray market buyers are important part of expansion.
