Zhu would seem to be the best thing that has happened to China in a while. The Chinese are not stupid; in fact, they are the best capitalist in the world. The Asian crisis may be turn out to be a real boon to economic reform in china. Zhu and his cadre of smart reformers now have even more ammunition in what will be a bloody battle to reform the economy.

Unless the chdx management is either braindead or intentionally screws things up, they should be in a unique position to capitalize on the fundamental reforms that will continue to affect every aspect of life in China, including health care.

Rick

News this morning was, at first glance, terrible. A $4.6 million loss and restructuring charge of $1.5 million.

But as I reconsider, it makes a lot of sense. In recent phone calls to the company, and my impression after I attended last year's annual meeting, was that the excitement is around the medical end of the business. This restructuring gives them clear focus on one market. Others have raised the question that a small company into a diverse product line from construction equipment to hospitals can's do any one of them justice. They were right! Management seems to be acknlowledging this.

Now if the medical business is indeed a good one in China, and if they have a foothold in medical distribution and health care delivery, the future of the stock could be much brighter.

Again This may be wishful thinking from someone whose average cost is about $4 per share!!!!!!!!

Meanwhile we got our tails whipped this morning with ATIS. I am still long half of my original position. Sold half at 15 1/2.

What is your knee-jerk reaction on the CHDX move? Positive or negative.

Barry

Just got off the phone with Larry Pemble. My guess is that they made the right move. Got out of business in which they were one of many players in a very competitive marketplace and focused their resources in an area where they have a competitive advantage.

Larry Pointed out:
1. They are the only health care company active in China.
2. The have the only joint licensed hospital.
3. Health care product distribution will be a very good business.
Instument Sales
Distribution of pharmaceuticals (Recent vaccine announcemnt)
Retail Pharmacy distribution.
These distrution areas look good.

Conversation with him was upbeat.
What's your take?
