Alcatel's switch isn't multiservice.

The need for multiservice in the backbone is questionable. This is what the edge's job is. More edge switches are sold so these better be good at what they do, and not get bogged down in other things or they tend to be non-competitive on cost.

The few telco's that bought them really regret it.
Not sure about this, but I'll take your word for it. If the are unhappy is it really about lack of multiservice in the backbone?

That will keep them winning not only the edge switches, but the core too.
I agree on edge, not sure about backbone.

The GX550 will start out doing 250,000 SVC's and then move to a million. No other switch can come close.

I think others currently do 16000 SVC per card in a 16 slot chassis, but I will find out who.

You make some good points. But don't discount sales relationships.
Alcatel is a large systems telecom provider, ASND is trying to be. My original point was that Alcatel may be targeting ASND for acquisition.
If the GX550 performs as advertised and Alcatel's ATM efforts are waning, they (Alcatel) will look hard at acquiring, IMHO.
