don't know how you arrived at this from my post, but that is what I think. You may hear people say that the Merced would be overkill for the personal desktop, but then again those same people said that 2mb of memory was overkill just 8 or 9 years ago. Things are moving much faster now than they were back then.

No, I mean technically. Do you think they'll be able to overcome the limitations of the cpu as currently outlined in order to be able to put it in a desktop/deskside form factor? How long do you think before it will be price/performance competitive with x86? How long before somebody wraps their brain around a compiler that will do it justice? How long before you can afford a cpu with >50M transistors? Power consumption? Have you really thought about all the issues, or are you extrapolating from INTC past performance?

Standards do exist. Unfortunately, the Web is evolving faster than its international
standards body, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), can keep up.

But beyond that, Behr and other developers contend that Microsoft more often veers
away from the standards than Netscape.

"While Microsoft will say in public, 'Oh, yes, we want to maintain standards,' in fact
they will make small changes in tags that create problems when a site is viewed in
(Netscape) Communicator," she says.
