I've seen larges blocks of 10-30K buying in the 20 1/8 - 20 1/4 area and ADPT has quickly bounced off the 20 1/16 mark. I'm in at 20 1/4...

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 26, 1998--Adaptec, Inc.
(NASDAQ:ADPT) has announced a UDF (Universal Disk Format) Reader that
allows MultiRead CD-ROM drives to read CD-ReWritable (CD-RW) UDF
discs, a critical step toward making CD-RW media the perfect solution
for storage, back-up, and file sharing.
"Achieving compatibility between CD-ROM drives and CD-RW media is
one of the keys to the success of the CD-R/RW market. By making a UDF
Reader available at no charge, we expect to kick the adoption of CD-RW
into warp speed," says Tom Shea, general manager for Adaptec's
Software Products Group. "And we believe that the presence of a
standard UDF Reader in the marketplace will accelerate the trend
toward greater UDF support in operating systems."
Currently UDF-formatted CD-RW discs cannot be read in CD-ROM
drives. Now with the Adaptec UDF Reader, Windows 95 or Macintosh
operating systems can read standard UDF formatted CD-RW discs in
MultiRead CD-ROM drives, giving consumers much needed compatibility
between CD-RW discs and CD-ROM drives. A UDF Reader for Windows NT 4.0
will be available in the coming weeks.

About the UDF Reader

Starting the last week of March, the new UDF Reader will be
offered as a free upgrade from the Adaptec World Wide Web site,
www.adaptec.com. The UDF Reader allows MultiRead CD-ROM drives to read
closed session UDF CD-R and CD-RW discs. UDF 1.5 (Universal Disk
Format) is the industry standard file system that enables incremental
writing of data to CD-R and CD-RW discs (packet writing). The UDF
Reader compliments Adaptec's packet writing application, DirectCD,
which gives users drive letter access to their CD-R/RW drive.

Tom: I had planned to add to my holdings at about $20 and did so at 20 1/8.

Hard to say where it's going from here. It's half the price I paid in December, when I thought it was a bargain. Very interesting situation now. I agree with Charlie about "window dressing" as an explanation for this downward trend. We--the small investors--aren't affecting the price. Institutions, I think, are pushing for a bottom, working on warnings from related businesses and jitters from Adaptec's spending on technology and facilities. We should take advantage of the game.
