Alternative Fuel Doubles on Hopes for Technology (Update1)

(Updates with closing share prices.)

Calgary, Alberta, March 26 (Bloomberg) -- Alternative Fuel
Systems Inc. shares more than doubled amid optimism about an
experimental technology that the company is developing to cut
pollution from diesel engines.

Shares of the Calgary, Alberta, company rose C$1.62
(US$1.15) to C$3.01 in Vancouver trading of 6.1 million shares,
more than 38 times the daily average. Earlier they touched
C$3.15. The stock was the most active issue on Canadian markets.

The company had no news to account for the heavy trading
activity. Its president, Gerhard Klopp, said the shares could be
gaining on the strength of recent agreements to market
Alternative Fuel's technology in Europe and a contract to convert
10,000 Mexican mini-buses to natural-gas fuel.

He also said investors may be buying shares because of the
recent stock gains in Ballard Power Systems Inc., which is
developing a fuel cell for General Motors Corp. and Daimler-Benz
AG.
''The enthusiasm over Ballard has been good for us,'' said
Gerhard Klopp,. ''It shows the big manufacturers have made a
commitment to alternative fuel systems.''

Ballard stock fell C$7 to C$137. The company has no
revenue and a market value of more than C$3 billion. Ballard
stock has more than doubled since the middle of last year.
