I've been attending JavaOne the last few days. The most interesting aspect of the conference to me has been the incredible potential of embedded Java. We have all been given a ring that has a 1,000,000 transistor Java chip embedded. You plug your ring into $20 devices attached to workstations and upload/download personal details.

The potential for developing new breed applications that incorporate Java functionality in consumer devices has everyone rethinking application design. Think of the potential for Customer information systems that interact with Java enabled cellular phones as an example.

On the other front there has been a huge amount of interest in Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) and nearly every Enterprise tools vendor has announced support. Its still early days but the combination of EJB/Corba and Java seems like a real winner for server side component development. I'm looking forward to seeing how Borland plan to meld all this together in their forthcomming products as they are very well positioned to become a dominant player in this area.

JBuilder 2 has been attracting good crowds at the Borland booth. When you walk into the hall they are the very first stand you see.
