The time to market advantage will be VERY short lived. GSTRF is only 3 - 6 months behind. It will take at least that to wake up the world to these new satellite type services. In this sense, GSTRF will benefit from IRIDF's 200 Million dollar advertising campaign. I hope for IRIDF's sake that there is something wrong with the numbers I posted a few messages back.

Globalstar and Iridium, at least initially, are not even competing for the same customers. This continuing discussion about Globalstar winning due to lower price is pointless. Iridium has always stated that their target customer was the well travelled businessman who must never be out of communication range. In this case, where these individual's time can be worth thousands of dollars per hour $3 per minute is meaningless. Globalstar will not work for these people. Globalstar does not cover all of the Earth's Oceans or skies.
Globalstar, in addition, has stated that they are not going after the well travelled businessman. Their target market is the rural areas that currently do not have access to communications. However, this puts G* in direct competition with the regional satellited communications providers that are beginning to pop up. G* will have difficulties competing with these companies on price.
The good news is that, at least in the short run, both I* and G* will have more demand than they can handle without stealing each others customers.
I know that there will be a number of replies of individuals claiming that they are in fact well travelled businessmen and price does matter. However, I will fall back on Readware's research that I* has plenty of demand to start up and through 1999. Do not make the mistake of projecting your own values to the rest of the world.

I agree with your comments regarding short-lived first to market advantage. By the way, I'm a first-timer on this board.

But, I would say that Iridium does have the US government as a customer pre-launch, and Ed Staiano has gone on record at an industry conference as saying that they have been turning away organizations that wanted to pre-order service. Organizations I assume could mean government and/or corporate.

I concur though with your observation on the need to fill capacity ASAP. Their margins are entirely dependent on a quick capacity utilization ramp-up.

Phil...The other side of that coin is just as interesting....If I* makes all their estimates than it in turn will drive up G* and Loral substantially ....I'm ready to enjoy......
