Alex,

Scintillating scotomata are the flashing lights or patterns of light some migraine sufferers see as a prodrome to onset of migraine headache. Some people experience only the scintillating scotoma and never develop head pain. Some people have auditory or olefactory sensations prior to onset of migraine headache. Again, some people may experience all of the above and other symptoms but never progress to actual head pain.
