MICROSOFT'S NEXT KIDNAP VICTIM? VRML (from www5.zdnet.com

Lest I be accused of not beating a dead horse, another sardonic take on how "Chrome" relates to "open", from Anchordesk breaking news.

Complaining the VRML consortium is slow to move forward, Microsoft will develop its own 3D Web technology, code-named Chrome. The software giant's platform-specific technology will translate between XML and Microsoft's DirectX multimedia technology. Goal is to make 3D graphics more prevalent on the Web. Reality is another standards battle. Not satisfied with kidnapping Java, now Microsoft wants to shanghai VRML.

Embrace and Demolish, as the saying goes. I guess the lip service "open" phase at Microsoft is past now, back to full fledged Windows World. If you follow the link, you'll see an attempt at balance, where Anchordesk follows its standard line on Java, Sun wants to be the new "proprietary lock" purveyor ala Microsoft. Sal will applaud their clear vision on that one, I'll just repeat that if worst comes to worst, two monopolistic death grips are better than one.

Cheers, Dan.
