James, I have also heard layoffs will approach 20,000. The company has 54,900 employees. This would be roughly 36% of the employees laid off. It's also my understanding that they will receive a nice severance package. ~ year's pay. All of this is hearsay, of course.

James - I don't like to see layoffs either, but would not be surprised at fairly large layoffs at DEC, especially in view of what is going on currently in regard to CPQ's earnings. I'll simply use IBM as an example. Back in 1985, IBM's workforce topped out at around 403,000 employees. By the early nineties, that number was around 215,000, now higher because they are hiring 15k employees or so each year for expansion in their services division. Point is, IBM in one form or another got rid of close to 200,000 folks.... When it came to dollars, skill did not matter too much (although in retrospect it certainly did, as IBM ended up hiring lots of talent that left as contractors/consultants). Think of it, 200k folks is a nice mid sized city....
