The Unbearable Lightness of Being Hi Fibre - 3/27

The Chinese curse of interesting times descended upon the imaginary Hi Fibre portfolio the last two weeks, starting with Ancor's startling Sun denouement.

ANCR shares lost $2.25 (25.5%) on Tuesday 3/17: $8.8125 - $6.5625. Friday 3/20 saw the price scooping $5.125 before closing @ $5.50. Worry or waylay on Monday? Looks like waylay, 3/23 closed high @ $5.875. Friday 3/27 saw a 3/4 spread: $6.75 - $7.50 and backed off of $7.00 at the close. It looks like the Sun decision was a non-decision? Ancor is beginning to get some trade journal exposure, and that can only be good for the first and only publicly traded FC switch vendor.

EMLX provided more excitement by getting financially mugged with the cost of success by paring production and delivery costs to pump up the profit margin at a cost - $13M. Their market is low cost arbitrated loop adapters and hubs. That market is crowded and noisy, price/features ratio will be deal maker-breakers. They did what they had to do to meet an increasingly competitive pricing model. The question is, will they have the time and money to continue or buy competitive R & D? Emulex leads the FC adapter market now, but ADPT and QLGC loom as large nextgen production capable competitors. Can Emulex continue to run with the fast FC crowd? Printer revenues are not going to resurrect the share price. Transitions stories can be long, and with Emulex at $17.375 in the portfolio, we'll see how long.

After losing $1.875 (16%) on 378k Thursday 3/26, Friday 3/27 525k action opened @ $10.00, 150K block set $8.00 low at 12:30, rebounded to $9.00 at 15:01, closed -$1.00 (10%) at $8.875.

BXH got a coveted CNBC spotlight on Friday and closed up 1/16 shy of $1.00, Alan Aranoff on top of it. I wonder if they'll get to $41.00 too? ;-) Alan:

CPCI broke the surface at $15.25 on Tuesday 3/24 but went back under to $14.75 and finished at the low the next three days. Scary stuff.

INPH disembarked the early Feb passengers at $8.00 and then some more got off at $7.00. Are Interphase investors getting the hang of this trading thing or is this an upcoming earnings thing?
