ITEM:Vixel Demos Complete Fibre Channel Storage Networking System at NAB; Vixel Runs Full Motion Video Over Managed Hub/Switch Fabric; 12 Other Vendors to Also Demo Vixel Products

BOTHELL, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 30, 1998--Vixel Corporation will demonstrate a complete Fibre Channel storage network, from physical layer to hubs and switches at National Association of Broadcasters.

Vixel's Fibre Channel storage interconnect products offer the connectivity, reliability and manageability necessary to provide enterprise-wide data access anytime and anywhere. The demo will run full motion video using Vixel's Rapport 2000 managed hub, the Rapport 1000 unmanaged hub, the Rapport 4000 switch as well as demonstrate Loop InSite, the only Fibre Channel interconnect management software that provides loop diagnostic, health and recovery capabilities.

"The storage networking market is developing rapidly. That's why it's very important at this stage to demonstrate Fibre Channel's full range of scalability, interoperability and performance," said Jeff Vogel, vice president of marketing and business development at Vixel. "Customers can now go to one company for all Fibre Channel interconnect products for a broad range of applications. In addition, our cutting edge SNMP-based Loop InSite software is the only management application that gives storage managers a single system view of the storage network along with visibility and control over their loop."

Vixel will demonstrate full motion video on a configuration that includes two SNMP-manageable, 12-port Rapport 2000 hubs, an 8-port FC-support Rapport 4000 switch, a Rapport 1000 unmanaged hub, Fibre Channel-attached Seagate Cheetah drives and two NT workstations. In addition to displaying full motion video, a monitor will also show the management and diagnostic capabilities of Loop InSite. Specifically, Rapport 2000 Loop InSite provides management of multiple stacks or loops, graphical screens that monitor and report detection of problems with color-coded indicators by loop, stack, hub and port views. It also features automated recovery that systematically restores an unstable loop in the event of a node fault condition. This analyzer capability of Loop InSite can be used to help build both managed and unmanaged Fibre Channel storage networks.

"While many vendors advocate hub-only or switch-only Fibre Channel solutions, storage networks will require unmanaged Fibre Channel loops for smaller applications, and centrally managed, multi-loop switched fabrics for scalable, enterprise-wide, data-intensive applications. They may also use them in various combinations to achieve price-performance points in solving application issues such as inter-departmental data and application sharing," added Vogel.

Vixel will be demonstrating its product line in the Sands Convention Center at booth #S10324 from April 6th through the 9th. Vixel's Rapport line of hubs and switches will also be demonstrated at:

About The Market

Preliminary Dataquest estimates indicate that the Fibre Channel switch and hub market will reach $1 billion by the year 2001. Dataquest estimates that users will spend approximately $10 billion on Fibre Channel disk subsystems by 2000 and 90% of these systems will be connected to switches and hubs.
