The article you posted said Dell was one of the few remaining substantial PC makers that hadn't gotten into "service."

I have gotten better service from Dell for free than I was ever able to get from a retailer. Dell has a complete list of my configuration that they can bring up to support their response to any question I ask. They have even made suggestions that will save me money! For volume customers, Dell will help configure the system, load the software, and put the customers' service tags right on the hardware before shipping. I believe it costs only about $10-$20 extra per computer. Saves the customer a bundle.

According to Michael Dell, when Compaq announced the acquisition of DEC, all of the other service providers that had been working with Compaq immediately called Dell and started working out how to support Dell. Many of these independent service companies help customers select software and hardware. That should push a lot of business in Dell's direction. Michael called it a "gift." I don't, in the next year or two, if ever, expect him to reverse this good fortune by acquiring a service house and sending everyone else running for cover.
