No, the failure rate of software projects cannot be blamed on Bill
Gates because why would so many companies be dumping Unix in favor of
NT if the Unix hardware vendors were delivering the goods?

The real issue here is two entirely different philosophies, Unix and
Javabeans being programmer centric versus Windows and COM+ being user
centric. Custom programming versus shrink wrap.

Most programmers like the big bucks they can make by delivering custom
solutions. A hetergenous environment is ideal for this. So its no
suprise programmers love Java. The Java philosophy promotes either
big IS departments (for programmers who want a life) or lucrative
custom programming because the application needs to be ported,
optimized, etc. because of the inability of "open standards" to
achieve 100% compatability.

The problem of open standard bodies is there is always ambiguity in
the specifications, the process is too slow, and functionality is
compromised because of politics. This has paralyzed Unix, Corba, etc.

The open HTML standards haven't prevented Microsoft from dominating
browsers because there are incompatabilites between Navigator and
Explorer and content developers can't support a whole bunch of
incompatible browsers.

Java is a nice language but as Stroustrup says, its more of a social
phenomenon rooted in anti-Microsoft rhetoric than anything else.
