If all the components are identical I would think it wouldn't matter at all which computer you bought. All things being equal I would say your buying customer service and I have seen some pretty bad things written about Compaq in that area.

If all the components are the same(unlikely) the biggest differences would be price and warranties and service by the seller. manufacture warranties would be the same but service can make a big difference.I have also heard that the clones are often made with factory seconds so... I think with the rapid change in computer technology and declining prices you shouldn't spend too much unless you've got money to burn. Just the same I bought IBM and have been very happy with the service.Good luck. ..in a few years it wouldn't matter what you bought because it will be obsolete and not worth upgrading anyway!

Don't really have a good question on which one to buy but---This weekend my neighbor and I went to Comp and bought a 56k US robotics
modem. The same config PC Pent 200 Pro Purchased at the same time.
He has A DELL and I have a Micron. He plugged in his new modem ran the set up, plug and play, running like a champ. Me with my Micron been working on it for 8 hrs it's not running. I've got CPQ stk but DELL seems to have it all together.

While Dell is very attractive (and) I have only heard great stuff about their computers, I would seriously consider buying a computer from a company that sells their stuff locally. The advantage of this is that theoritically one can more easily get the problem(s) solved/fixed. This is why I am considering buyinf a Compaq from RadioShack.

I'll add my two cents also. Performance differences are there but it's unlikely that you would notice in most cases from the keyboard. Major magazines such as PC Magazine test the machines every which way on a regular basis, most measures are fairly close. As was mentioned by a previous poster, warranty is important and will vary in length. Dell gives you three years, Compaq one on Presario (home use), 3 on their Deskpro machines (business). Also, in many cases the business machines come with different components that make them faster, such as SCSI hard drives instead of EIDE, and faster memory. In the laptop arena, IBM's 380 series Thinkpads come with a one year warranty, the 770 and 560 series come with a three year. From what I can tell, Gateway gives you a 3 year warranty but 'lifetime' software support on the machine.
