And there's AOL's proprietary compression, which degrades images and
makes unusable many forms and other cgi stuff; plus other out-of- standard things (including in what AOL calls MSFT IE, but which is a huge bastardization of it) that requires many sites to post special "if you're accessing via AOL" disclaimers and apologies.

you compared AOL's network to accessing a *local* ISP.

what about the nationwide ISPs like those from the telcos,
earthlink, ibm, etc.? Do they have distributed servers
all across the country? Or a single access point like AOL?
