If children are not nourished their brains will not grow properly and they will be drags on society for the rest of their lives. If a society can feed them good food, and give their minds something to grow on as well, then at least you have a chance that they will be productive citizens. And that is what we want isn't it? More productive citizens and less dead wood? We just don't agree on how to get there. And while it would be nice to punish irresponsible adults I don't want to live in a country where the poor starve and die outside my door, or where people become so desperate (as in some South American countries) that kidnapping for profit becomes a major problem.
